A federal grand jury Friday indicted a Warren County man on charges of using the mails to sell and distribute magazines containing photographs of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Richard Burkhardt, 49, of Washington Township, was charged with mailing magazines entitled ''Bare Boys'' and ''Nudist Children and Their Parents'' in June and July.
Burkhardt, a volunteer fireman, circus promoter and stunt car driver, allegedly engaged in the sale of the underground pornographic magazines through a company named ''Sue Hall Enterprises'' operated out of his home. The magazines were advertised through a newsletter published by the defendant entitled ''Mini-Skirt News,'' postal inspectors said.
Burkhardt was held in the Hundterdon County Jail on $100,000 bond on state charges involving the aggravated sexual assault of a 3-year-old girl, authorities said. If convicted on the federal charges, Burkhardt faces up to 20 years in prison and a $200,000 fine.
